Comments: I ran at the American River College stadium track today doing speedwork. Earlier today I volunteered for Adopt-A-Highway and walked about one mile with a lot of effort. Combined with the 55 minutes of running from last night my legs felt sore when I got out to do speedwork for the first time. The idea behind speedwork is to get a feel for the pace which I'll be running between walk breaks during the marathon. My pace turns out to be 10:15, or 2:36/lap on a 400-meter track (1,600 meters being a close enough approximation of one mile). It took me a while to read through the section of Galloway's book on speedwork and get a feel for what he meant. Then I did the math and figured out how fast I needed to run. As I warmed up I read through the stadium track's legend explaining what the various colors and shapes painted on the track meant. For example, the 800 m starts are represented by a green line. The 1,600 m relay zones are represented by blue triangles, and so forth. I am slowly learning these markings.
