ASICS Gel-Kayano 31, Style: Steel Grey/Piedmont Grey (#197298495509)

Off day. Ran errands. Purchased a new pair of running shoes at Fleet Feet in Menlo Park, California: ASICS Gel-Kayano 31 #197298495509 Style: STEEL GREY/PIEDMONT GREY.

My current shoes--New Balance 860v14 Fresh Foam X--have 382.3 of 400 mi (~95%). They're OK, but I noticed they feel a bit too "low" in the front for my right foot. So trying ASICS for my next pair. I'm going to wear the New Balance for a few more runs and then donate them.

Comments: Off day before running an unofficial marathon distance on Sunday. The heat wave is still rolling through the San Francisco bay area 🥵 Sunday expected high is 99 F. So probably will end up running when it is dark, if possible. The coolest part of the day will be 70 F at 6:00 a.m. 😝 The real heat of the day will begin after 8:00 a.m. The longer it takes, the harder it will get. My last marathon-length distance was the San Francisco Marathon on July 28. 10 weeks ago. Feels like forever.

Comments: Off day. Early morning run for coffee to a unionized Starbucks in downtown San Jose. Then shopping at Cost Plus World Market, then Target, then back to San Pedro Square for lunch, then Costco, then home. Watched The Color Purple, then sat on the couch and watched random Doctor Who reruns on the free with ads channel ("The Ribos Operation"). Have not planned what my Sunday run will look like. Maybe something like a 7-10 mile maintenance run. Fellrnr's wiki page suggests 2 alternatives for training two minutes slower than marathon overall 10:40/mile pace: 1) 12:41/mile overall pace at 9:17/mile run pace in 1:00/1:00 run/walk intervals; and 2) 12:49/mile overall pace at 9:26/mile run pace in 0:30/0:30 run/walk intervals.

Comments: Taking an off day. Thought about XT on the stationary recumbent cycle, but too busy. Probably OK to taper as I prepare for Sunday half-marathon. Booked hotel & parking. Realized due to schedule conflict we may have to pickup our bibs on race day for an extra fee 😛 We will not be able to make the Saturday race expo, which runs from 9:00-4:00 p.m. Updated my Garmin smartwatch workouts to note the run pace for each. ✅ Hard to believe it has been 3 weeks since the SF Marathon! Reviewed my "improvement" notes from the SF Marathon, and realized I still do not have a reliable fueling strategy. No time to really establish one. I have energy gummies. Shown above is the Roark - Alta 5" Shorts (Color: Costa;  Item #207190) I purchased on August 5 from REI--just before vacation. Out of many shorts we looked at, this one actually has a roomy back pocket for a phone. It also has roomy back-side pockets for keys & credit cards. I wore them on Wednesday and they seem to work OK. I did not try putting my phone in the back pocket as I was monitoring a mobile game. We had gone to REI buy new boots for Dawn, to give her toes some relief. At that time, I also purchased: Honey Stinger Waffle & Honey Stinger Gluten-Free Waffle, and GU Energy Chews (Strawberry). Also purchased 2 bags of Tailwind Nutrition - Recovery Drink Mix (Chocolate). Nice thing about using the REI credit card--many of these purchases are offset by the kickbacks given by the credit card companies. 😛

Comments: Penultimate off day 🐢 Working instead on relaxing and decompressing as much as possible. Ibuprofen, skipped coffee, hydration, etc. Seems to help--while I felt dizzy when I awoke, it seems...less than on Wednesday? Did Epley Maneuver exercises last night before bed and this morning. They sort of helped, but not completely. Definitely feel the room spinning when I turn left (and not really when turning right). This Reddit thread indicates it most likely represents an issue with the left ear. Some terms: cervicogenic (starts after neck movement), BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo--disorder of the inner ear). Switching topics: I am feeling excited with less than 72 hours to go until the SF Marathon. The days keep ticking down one-by-one. All seems to happen so quickly. Friday: last maintenance run. Saturday: Off day; 5K & expo (morning). Sunday: Race. 👀 Normal day-to-day rhythm interrupted by necessity to organize, prepare, pack. It will feel "real" on Friday night, I think. 💜

Comments: Woke up feeling dizzy. OK to walk around. Mid-morning, had coffee and sat down at counter to have a snack and felt nauseous & dizzy. Lay down and sweated through a mild fever. Rested for about an hour or so and felt almost normal again. Rest of the day feeling almost normal. Hydrating. I stayed up past midnight, so maybe just not enough sleep? Or slept in awkward position? 🤔 Disquieting. Tested negative for COVID-19 using both an antigen & molecular test ✅ Feeling re-assurance about that, at least. Hot today, and cooling in the days leading up to the SF Marathon. Looks like weather this Sunday will be almost perfect--overcast, high 50's-low 60's F. Welcome news. Giving myself lots of rest today.

Comments: Preparing for what will likely be--if all goes well--the longest long run of the year on Sunday: 28 miles. 💪🏼 Sunday forecast: high of  31° C (88° F). First light: 5:23 a.m.; sunrise: 5:54 a.m. Lowest temperatures around 5:00-6:00 a.m.: 18° C (64° F), with 76% humidity & slight wind. If only it was that temperature the whole time. Instead, it gets hotter and more difficult/unpleasant the longer it takes. Today is an off day. Coffee at Chromatic Coffee in San Jose. Our 2nd visit. Interior much more built-out now. Relaxed outside in the shade at a wobbly table, enjoying coffees & pastries. Going to get up and get running by first light on Sunday, hopefully. If I can finish 10 miles every ~2 hours, hoping to get done in 7-8 hours, including breaks for re-applying sunblock, hydration, etc. Noon temperatures projected to be 28° C (82° F), so the sooner the better. 😛 Not quite "real" for me yet: 3 weeks from tomorrow is the SF Marathon I have trained for since January. My sore hamstrings have me a bit cautious about going out too fast. I wondered last night as I fell asleep: might a stressful sleeping position be the cause? I sleep on my side some nights, so trying to relax my legs a bit intentionally last night. Last night I also took a hot bath with salts, then magnesium body lotion to also help. Today feels better. Saturday I am being a couch potato. Watching a new Rambalac Japan walking tour video "Narita Taiko Festival overview". Made a Negroni for the first time in memory of Anthony Bourdain. Have my audiobooks queued for the run--will finish my current book and start a new one. This represents the first long run in my new New Balance 860 shoes. My feet feel so much better in them, and I am hopeful that the calluses and feet pain issues of the past few months will subside. Not yet planned: what my training schedule will look like after the SF Marathon. I have a few weeks planned out as recovery weeks.
Any irregular feelings, aches, pains, heart rate, and so forth?: Hamstrings slightly sore

Comments: Off day. New shoes: New Balance - Fresh Foam X 860v14 (Grey Matter with Black and Ginger Lemon). Purchased at Fleet Feet - Menlo Park, where an assistant scanned my feet with a Volumental scanner. It turned out I need a bit wider shoe, so have a 2E now. Tried 4 pairs. The assistant mentioned my feet point inward and after doing a knee-flex bounce test (stand on one foot and slightly squat down so the knee flexes), noticed the knee moves inward. He thought that might explain some chafing/callous on my toes. I.e., pronating inward. Immediately felt so much better than my old pair of HOKA Challenger ATR 7. The assistant explained the shoe I was using was meant more for trail running (hello 💡 That explains why on sale at REI). Sunday is magic mile time trials, for total of 6 miles.

Comments: Charging smart watch for 26-mile Sunday long run. Slept a bit less than I'd prefer so feel a bit tired. Got dessert at Amia Bakery in Fremont, then groceries at Trader Joe's. Warmer today but pleasant. Sunday sunrise: 5:47 a.m. 🥱 Temperatures will climb from 13° C (54 F) to 23° C (73 F) at noon. Idea is to run 10 miles starting at sunrise, then run 10 miles with Dawn starting at ~8:00 a.m., then finish with 6 miles solo. Alternatively, run 2x 10-miles solo, then last 6.2188 miles with Dawn (~10K) starting around 10:00 a.m. Running the full marathon distance represents more of a mental challenge than a physical one. I trust my body can do it if I go slow and steady like the turtle. 🐢

Comments: Off day. Thinking about 23-mile run on Sunday. Will probably split it into two parts of ~10 miles each, then add on the extra 3 miles (?) I have a roughly 10-mile loop with rest points for hydration which has worked out well. Hopefully my legs & knees hold up. Probably solo run as Dawn resting her Achilles. I started my last long run of 20 miles around 8:00 a.m., and finished around 1:00 p.m., so I am guessing it will take me roughly at least that amount. Will probably start earlier, which means getting up before sunrise...maybe 5:00 a.m. (?) 😝 Will see about taping my toes/moleskin after the 1st 10 miles. Was mentioning to Dawn how 23 miles (just short of a marathon) seems like another goal to meet. These long run days go slow on purpose, as main goal is injury-free completion, to build up the base. Will be on the cool side, only breaking 60 F after 10:00 a.m. or so 👍🏼 We spent the day today trying Pineapple King Bakery for the 1st time, arriving just past its opening time at noon at the Fremont location, where we had to compete for parking spots and also the line was maybe a dozen people long. The line moved quickly. The Hong Kong-style pineapple mini-buns tasted chewy with crumbly crusts & various fillings/butters. We had initially seen the Pineapple King Bakery location (with even longer lines) in San Francisco several years ago, when we visited Mochi Donut and e-Tea restaurant just off Golden Gate Park. Then we went to the Westfield Mall San Jose and walked around a bit, then CVS to get a birthday card, then a restaurant for dinner, and finally home, where we watched The Mads Are Back episode for May 2024.
Any irregular feelings, aches, pains, heart rate, and so forth?: Legs a bit tired
