Comments: Dawn and I walked at the American River Parkway, passing five wild turkeys before taking an access road to the power substation and then across a meadow to another wooded trail. I showed her the bees and where the hawk likes to perch. Everything was still again today, the reflection of the trees on the river quite pretty. After taking a trail north of the bike path, we happened along a family of California quail, a black cat, and a black-tailed deer. Walking back along the trail an Acorn Woodpecker greeted us on a branch just over our heads, dropping a twig with dark berries before flying to a higher perch. A late-afternoon walking day — calm, peaceful, the piles of fallen leaves and low river giving hints of the colder times ahead.
