What Would Atticus Do?

Saw this bumper sticker on Saturday. From the Santa Cruz Book Shop web site:
We were so inspired by our Community Book Group celebration of the 50th Anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird that we created bumper stickers to carry the spirit of the book’s beloved characters year round. As Public Defender Larry Biggam said, he always asks himself, “What would Atticus do?” before talking to his teenage son. We hope you enjoy this sticker along with our other version, “What would Scout do?” available now.

2,650

The Pacific Crest Trail seems actually 2,663 miles in length, but a bumper sticker advertising "2,650" on it tickled me this morning. : o )

Well played!

Proud to be Sanatan

Saw this on a bumper sticker (or something like it) a month or two ago.

This refers to Hinduism. From Wikipedia: "Sanātana Dharma, a Sanskrit phrase meaning "the eternal law", or the "eternal way"."

Contrasting bumper stickers

Just messing with people: put contrasting bumper stickers/magnets/what have you on your vehicle.

For example, the National Rifle Association (NRA) contrasted with something written by Michael Moore.

Comments: Daylight Saving Time went into effect on Sunday and I found myself with an opportunity to run a maintenance run in daylight. Overcast skies cast a blueish-gray light on the neighborhood, dulling everything into drab, muted colors. The temperature was comfortable, the light precipitation a nice contrast to drier evenings, and the petrichor was amazing--pines and earth, grass and leaves. I enjoy daylight running. I feel safer, more sure-footed, and running faster. As I ran toward Deterding Park, near 3100 Berkshire Way, I approached a parked vehicle on my right and two groups of people: (1) a person behind the wheel of the parked vehicle; and (2) a man and woman standing in the driveway. "$385! I paid it! Yeah, that's right!" yelled the man to the driver of the parked vehicle. The woman appeared to be attempting to de-escalate the situation, but the man on the sidewalk was having none of it. "Go on, get out of here. Drive off," he yelled. The man in the vehicle seemed to say, "Are you drunk enough, yet?" This set off the man outside the vehicle again. "Tell that to your punk ass bitch girlfriend, the one who has done all of Sacramento," he yelled. By this time, I was hearing things well after I had passed the vehicle, almost to Dom Way. "Come on, get out of the truck!" As I rounded the corner, I heard a few thumps of what sounded like the man kicking the vehicle. At this point, I was glad to be well past the still escalating situation. I do not get this much excitement, every night. The rest of the run was uneventful. I noticed in the daylight another water fountain. I re-ran the muddy trail in Jonas-Landspur Park, only hearing one frog. As I ran, a man and his girlfriend warned me, "It's wet ahead." "Is it passable?" I asked. "Yeah, stay to the side," he replied. I thanked him and kept going. As I ran north on Evelyn Avenue, a young man walked past me and hopped into a parked vehicle. The vehicle drove half a block, passing me, then dropped him off. Not sure what that was all about--a drug deal? Strange. Also on this block, a bumper sticker reading, "English doesn't borrow from other languages; English follows other languages down dark alleys, knocks them over, and sifts through their pockets for loose grammar." I felt really great, physically, after this evening run. I found a new way to push off with my feet which seemed more like gliding. I ended the run feeling just fine. Four miles, no problem.

E Clampus Vitus

I saw a small Clamper bumper sticker on a van last week. ^_^ They seem even more hilarious than the Odd Fellows groups I saw on the way to Yosemite in December:
All members are officers and all officers, the organization professes, are of equal indignity.
Sacramento's New Helvetia Chapter meets the third Tuesday of each month at Round Table Pizza. What, not Mountain Mike's? ;)

The Sacramento Odd Fellows have a IOOF Hall at 1831 Howe Ave.

Random Acting

On the way home this evening I saw a bumper sticker with the text "RandomActing.com." I thought it referred to a group promting random acts of kindness, which seemed to contrast with the woman playing loud rap music. When I looked it up this afternoon, it appears to be a group of improv musicians in downtown Sacramento.

Comments: Wore my GPS system for the first time today. I found myself looking at my watch continually to identify my speed. Ended up running faster than I might have otherwise, averaging around 5.5 mph, although I went as high as 8.3 mph at one point. 5.5 mph is a 4.76 hour marathon pace, but I doubt I can maintain that pace for that long. Someone has scrawled a '4' in front of the pavement 20 mile-marker, so it reads, "420." Wore my Superman colors again, saturated red and blue. Decided I would like to wear a Superman t-shirt during the first marathon. :) Someone broke a bottle on the pedestrian bridge and left the gloss there. How rude. I saw two park trucks on garbage detail. Ran past one family's big dog not on a leash; felt a bit nervous. The river water is still ridiculously high. Running faster felt good though. When I sprinted at the end, my left leg felt stiff, so I did not extend my stride too far. The clouds on the far eastern horizon were blackish-blue and downpouring. The man who parks his white car with the "Dog is my co-pilot" bumper sticker on Bridge Street was leaving when I arrived, but he had returned when I finished my run. Not sure why he spends so much time there, or whether he lives there in his car. Saw a Rancho Cordova Parking Enforcement car leaving the parking lot area. Passed one man sitting by himself on a picnic table at the mile-19 wayside park, and passed him again on the return. The water fountain drain at mile 18 is clogged, and the basin fills with water. The handle of the fountain at mile 19.5 sticks, so it continues to run sometimes after the person using it leaves. Saw some acorn woodpeckers swoop down to the dirt shoulder today around the mile 19 marker.

Comments: Slow walk. Humid air. Overcast. Usual cast of characters out in the woods. Some crows said hi as I passed. There is a calm brown and white pigeon that never attempts to flee that lives near the place where the fishers stand in the water. Second time I have seen it. Smell of humid plants and dirt as I walked through the woods was refreshing. A park ranger passed me in his truck and we exchanged waves, my sense of community for the walk. Four women joggers passed me, one with a baby stroller, talking. Noticed an installation of a portable toilet near the camp area just past the mile 21 marker. Something must be going on this weekend. The water control people were sampling the water with a containment truck today. As I re-crossed the bridge, a co-ed group of youths got a few honks from the truck as it drove away. They exclaimed "That guy just made my day" to me as they passed, and we shared a laugh. :) There is a guy with a white car and the bumper sticker "Dog is my co-pilot" that is down by the river every time I go down there. I see him sleeping in his car sometimes. Yesterday a rooster was standing outside his car door and when I returned it was still there, so he must have fed it. I am thinking he is living out of his car.
