Weird Al Concert - August 22, 2025 at Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California

Dawn and I traveled to Mountain View, California, to attend the 22 August 2025 "Weird Al" Yankovic concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre. 

This represents our 7th Weird Al concert:

1. 2007 - San Joaquin County Fair, Stockton, California
2. 2010 - California State Fair, Sacramento, California
3. 2013 - California State Fair, Sacramento, California
4. 2015 - Showroom at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada (we won the “Weird Al” Yankovic Mandatory World Tour Contest)

Getting There 

Parked on Old Middlefield Way. Walked over the pedestrian bridge and through the Google complex. Ate at Zareen's Indian & Pakistani take-out restaurant. This time I had a Tikka/Madras Burrito Wrap with Paneer Tikka, and Dawn had a Naan Wrap with Veggie Samosa and a side of Tikka sauce. We shared a Mango Lassi.

Walked to Shoreline Amphitheatre. Noticeably less chaotic than the July 4 concerts. They had closed-off the escalators and routed everyone to the sidewalk access. This time Dawn had a clear-plastic shoulder-bag, so no problems with security. 

Pre-Show

Used the restrooms, took a photo in front of the marquee sign, and walked to the merch tent. Purchased two CD's by Steve Jay: 1) Physical Answer (2008); and 2) Off-Bass (2025). Dawn purchased the black tour dates shirt. Bought a non-alcoholic sparkling berry drink. Felt a bit embarrassed because we were standing next to a young couple and they were in line ahead of us, but the cashier I guess decided they weren't ready and called on us first. They were gracious about it, thankfully. 

Found our seats, Section 102, Row H, which was pretty good spot. As we sat down, the man to my immediate left sat down and snapped off his belt-mounted mobile phone case (his phone was OK, I think he was holding it). He and his partner seemed justifiably unhappy but rolled with it. I think I overheard him eventually saying he found he could just buy the side that broke, which he was grateful for. Over the course of the opener and concert his enthusiasm endeared him to me : ) He asked if we had seen Puddles Pity Party before and I was a bit confused if he meant live, so I said no, even though we'd seen him online. "Our people". 

Puddles Pity Party opened the show. What a voice. Great entertainer. He had a running joke about Kevin Costner, showing video montages of his various film appearances while he sang. He invited 2 people on stage to help him--the first to play a fake guitar with him, and the second to don a tequila-bottle costume for a sad song he sang in Spanish. He had a song mocking pumpkin spice, where a man in an inflatable pumpkin costume walked around. He threw quite a few guitar picks and a few adults dashed forward to snag a few. 

The weather was warm but a bit breezy, so we put on our jackets. Stadium and lawn seemed sold-out. 

Weird Al Concert

The show was entertaining. This time they had three women in the band as backup musicians: 1) Payton Rose Velligan; 2) Monique Donnelly; and 3) Scheila Gonzalez. Probyn Gregory appeared as well. Stage manager Hawkeye was there for bit parts (Santa suit, harmonica, Segway, etc.).

Confetti cannons shot red and white streamers during Canadian Idiot, and I think a second time as well. 

During the Tacky off-stage performance (shown on video), a helper put a whipped-cream pie on Puddles Pity Party's face.  

The show had a seconds-long speaker glitch during the second song. Steve Jay was indicating trouble with his sound setup early on, but it seemed they figured it out. Overall I'd have preferred dropping the bass levels and overall volume about 10%, but it was manageable. 

Drummer Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz had a 180-degree plexiglass wall in front of his kit, perhaps to shield his drums from the bubbles released during an early song. 

Al's fat suit looked a bit slimmer than previous years. 

During "One More Minute", he walked the aisle and gave scarves and a pair of heart-shaped underpants to fans.

Reddit confirms the Yoda Chant at the end does get extended a bit during each tour.  

Overall, I was a bit tired this time, and by Stop Forwarding That Crap to Me I was content. Weird Al's voice seemed a bit raspier than I remembered, his hair was thinner, but he still gave his all. The crowd was happy, and we got through it without any problems.

Post-Show

As we exited we saw a long line waiting for what seemed like a meet-and-greet.

Walked out to the Permanente Creek Trail, avoiding people vaping and blowing smoke carelessly. 🤬  Pretty empty compared to the crush of people on July 4--perhaps more come out in the surrounding areas to watch the fireworks as well. Drove home and crashed. 

Coda

The next day I had moderate bowel problems--maybe too much dairy & cheese (?)  Haven't felt anything like it in some time, so I'm hesitant to say it was Zareen's (it was Zareen's). Not painful, just very, very bloated. First time that happened after eating there, so probably will fall back to getting the Naan wrap next time and skipping the paneer burrito. 

Weird Al - The Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley

Dawn and I attended Weird Al's Strings Attached Tour performance at The Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley, on August 9, 2019.

We arrived early. I was starting to feel a head cold. We parked on Shattuck initially and walked past old haunts. At the original Pete's location on Vine, we settled-in and I rested while I listened to a woman unsuccessfully attempt to get phone tech support for her Apple laptop. I had an unsweetened matcha tea latte, which was lovely. Dawn had a mocha, I think.

Pre-show supper was Taste of the Himalays, where everything was great:

• Chicken Nauni (Butter Chicken) Boneless premium chicken thigh meat baked in the Tandoor and then cooked in Himalayan style dairy based buttery sauce
• Palak Mushroom *Vegan (Minced spinach and fresh mushroom cooked with onion, tomato based sauce)

We found a spot near the Kleugel House and this was perfect, just as it was in 2012. Strolling through UC Berkeley, we found the bookstore closed. Telegraph Avenue was next, and a lot of things there were closed too, though we ducked into a Tokyo reseller store where Dawn purchased a few SumiSumi surprise toys.

By the time we got to the ticket line (after averting a crisis in getting the tickets in the app), the line had stretched all the way back to the parking garage. We got in, purchased a tee shirt, and found our seats--pretty cramped. There were a bunch of Weird Al impersonators (~12?).

The show was tightly orchestrated and the orchestra was flawless. The sight of hundreds of mobile devices illuminating the night along with Don't Download This Song was memorable. Weasel Stomping Day has ... not aged well and didn't resonate (weird! disquieting?). Harvey the Wonder Hamster was perfect--thank you.

There's something about Jackson Park Express that Weird Al seems to personally like--the musicianship, perhaps, the nod to past greats. It's not the lyrics, but it would be the song that came into my head in the next few days.

After the show we noted the hanging brocade lamps in the back of the stage area.

Driving home was uneventful, thankfully.

I wish I wish I hadn't been sick--I felt muted.

We attended Weird Al's May 17 Monterey, California performance,  at the Golden State Theatre.

The Golden State Theatre venue has lovely detail work and an upper balcony, where we sat in row double-O, dead center. Seats in that section chafed on my knees (I'm over six feet) but otherwise comfortable.

Before entering, we got tickets from will-call. While there, the CID Entertainment guy with the purple sequin jacket came in, making multiple requests of theatre staff to put out tabling materials for the VIP experience. He claimed the VIPs might ask for a refund if they didn't have tabling out, but the theatre staff just kept deflecting his concerns, eventually telling him they would show him that nearly everyone had already received their packets, to which he meekly said, "OK" and accepted his fate. I guess they'd heard it all before and didn't want to do it for the act du jour.

Once inside, we purchased a tee shirt for Dawn, two popcorns, and an Angry Orchard hard cider (apple?). We looked around the ground floor and then went up to our seats. 

Emo Philips opened and did very well. One heckler kept acting obnoxiously but he shut him down.

• They don't make theatres like this anymore, not since they abolished child slavery laws

The person to my left seemed bored; he had his elbows on his knees and head in his hands for a good portion. We thought maybe he was a younger fan and wanted more recent stuff (?)

After the show, we looked for Dawn's friend, Lydia, almost giving up before running into her and her boyfriend Mark outside the theatre. While walking around the block, we passed Steve Jay walking in the opposite direction on a smoke break. Lydia asked for and got a hug, while Mark invited him to join us and he politely declined. Dawn mentioned later she extended her hand but he declined to shake it...maybe he's a germophobe (?) 

Outside the theatre rear entrance, we paused by the tour buses where a number of fans had gathered. We settled-in at a booth in restaurant Turn 12 Bar and Grill, which faced the tour buses, so Lydia and Mark could eat (pizza) and keep an eye on when Al appeared. Mark and Lydia had two complaints: 1) The tour priced out the hardcore fans; and 2) Play something other than The Saga Begins. Lydia enlisted another fan waiting outside our window to alert her with his signature animal noise, to which he politely declined to share but agreed to tap on the window instead. Lydia eventually went outside the window and pressed her face against the glass and made a silly face (beaver?), leaving the rest of us to eat. Mark went outside to find Lydia and returned to tell us she had found her way into the theatre via the back entrance and was in line to meet Al. Mark invited us along and we slipped into the theatre, dodging roadies moving wheeled equipment boxes down the ramp. After only a few moments, a tour staff member busted us and we left. Mark seemed to feel guilty, apologizing to us and two other people the tour staff member had also dismissed for lack of a VIP pass. We hung around outside in the cool air. Lydia recognized one of the roadies (Gonzo?) and walked over to say hello. We saw the tour staff member walk over to the bus, dump her backpack, and return to us. I think Mark and Lydia had considered going back inside but Lydia declined saying the tour staff member would be back, and her intuition was correct. The tour staff member firmly said she didn't have to do anything for us, she wasn't a nice person, but she was going to punch our event tickets to let us get one item signed by Al, when he got to the bus. Lydia mentioned her first concern, about pricing, and the tour staff member said the promoters set the prices, so she can't change it. By the time Al came out, he said "hi", and the tension had left the air. The two other people who had gotten kicked out for a lack of pass also were allowed to get one item signed. The guy from CID entertainment who we had seen at will call had appeared, sans purple jacket, and also was in a good mood. We had all tried to determine what to get signed. Dawn got her ticket signed. Lydia got him to sign her gold sneakers (while wearing them, after a bit of back and forth reassuring the tour staff she could lift them safely for Al to sign). Mark got the inside of his phone cover signed. I got the inside of my wallet signed (they teasingly threatened to steal it, by shutting the bus door). After that, we said our goodbyes and drove back to Santa Cruz. 

My favorite song: Dare to Be Stupid, in the style of The Grateful Dead. Dawn's favorites: One More Minute and The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. It was awesome to hear the Elements Song by Tom Lehrer, which seemed fitting because Tom taught at UC-Santa Cruz and has a home there. 

Lydia and Mark were heading on to Turlock the next night for the May 19 show, and hoped to hear Yoda (a wish fulfilled!) instead of The Saga Begins. 

“Weird Al” Yankovic Mandatory World Tour - Las Vegas

Dawn recently won, with about ~50 others, the “Weird Al” Yankovic Mandatory World Tour Contest, which included the following:

NOTES - PRE/POST-PERFORMANCE PARTY

• Pre-show details:
• Event staff wore red berets and military uniforms, in keeping with the propaganda-themed imagery of the album

• Spinnable Wheel of Fish with medium-sized blinking red light, at center (initially obscured by black banner with words "Top Secret")

• Weird Al arrived in a brown tunic shirt and blue jeans after 45-60 minutes (he had other commitments, with other fans, first)
• Al signed 18"x24" tour posters for everyone (one per group)
• One cell phone photo, per group, with random requests considered (for example, Al posed with one woman in a dip dance move; another, he stood and posed, looking off to the distance, as did the fans)
• Jay Levey, Weird Al's manager, quietly observed the signing from the side
• Event staff members took the cell phone photos
• Overall party impressions -- ups and downs
• Bad news first:
• Cash bar prices--welcome to Las Vegas!
• Photo-booth malfunctions (note: per emcee, resolved after he called the photo-booth company president)
• Emcee seemed overheated in military uniform and overstretched, which seemed to distract him from connecting with the audience, a bit
• I sensed some awkward energy in the room during two of the unannounced pre-show party events...I think contestants and event staff handled things relatively gracefully but I wonder if event staff might consider discussing a more inclusive way to determine winners (?) Maybe it was just me and everyone had a great time (?) : o )
• At the after-party, one or two overly intoxicated individuals seemed fired up and edging toward belligerence...overheard the person relate to someone else, in a somewhat defensive tone, how someone earlier had commented on his drinking and/or behavior...he then proceeded to start going off on, "I won a trip to Las Vegas to have fun!", "Don't tell me what to do...", and so forth, and so forth...it set a more edgy tone to things than I preferred, for sure
• Thinking of things from a family-friendly angle, the night club represented a relatively subdued environment, compared to the Pleasure Pit gogo dancers visible below, on the casino floor, but the night club's back hallway--used as an exit after poster signing--did have a few larger-than-life racy pics...again, welcome to Las Vegas, parents ; o )
• Good news:
• Emcee--that voice!
• Technology (other than noted above) had everything on point--multimedia displays, lights, audio, music
• Props seemed right on point--banners, costumes, accessories for photo-booth, lectern, Wheel of Fish, and so forth
• Food seemed well done, to me--especially the hamburger sliders
• Resolved the photo-booth technical glitch
• After-party went off without a hitch, including food and handing out poster sleeves
• Al obviously exhausted, hand was a claw when he signed our poster, but soldiered on (please excuse the pun)
• Jay Levey appearance!
• Overall, a smashing success and it speaks very well to the entire team, moving forward!!

Weird Al at the California State Fair, July 14, 2013

Dawn and I saw Weird Al perform at the California State Fair on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

We arrived around 6:45 p.m.. After paying $24 to enter the Fair, we immediately ordered a $18 margherita pizza from Cardinali Wood Fire Pizza on the Main Promenade.

We walked through the “Jewels of the Jungle” exhibit in the Floriculture area, viewing snakes and parrots.

As a birthday gift for a friend, we purchased a $60 "Best of Show" 2010 cabernet franc (red) from Imagery Estate Winery, from the "Wine Country" area.

Next, we walked briefly through the Shopper's Expo, winding our way past the Full-Auto Airsoft shooting range and the people rolling around on top of water in inflatable, clear plastic bubbles.

We had two Negro Modelo beers (an amber and a lager for $18) at the Tecate booth next to the main stage, in the hopes paying customers could watch from the Tecate picnic table seating. After asking Fair staff where to sit, they pointed me to an officer handing out wristbands for free seating. Dawn and I grabbed two, finished the beers, and found a decent seat in the main seating area. We had checked the night before and the only $40 reserved seats remaining were off in the corner, not too far away from where we ended up. • He also did some silly hands waving at the end : o )
• Segue with Rubén Valtierra playing the Star Wars song "The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)", then the Addams Family intro

• Everyone took off the outer brown robes, leaving behind the Luke Skywalker white robes

After the show, Dawn and I watched a bunch of people going in to see Weird Al and the band via backstage passes.

We walked over to see the animals, but the barns were empty, so we ended the night with a walk back past the Main Promenade.

Weird Al In Concert: California State Fair

Dawn and I were at the California State Fair on Sunday to see Weird Al. We sat in Section C, Row U, Seats 10 and 11 around 7:00 p.m. with plenty of kettle corn. The place filled up completely by showtime.

Weird Al In Concert: Stockton

Dawn and I traveled to the San Joaquin County Fair on Friday to see Weird Al. Sat down in great seats (free admission after paying Fair entrance price of $8) around 5:45 with umbrella for shade, plenty of water, funnel cake, lemonade, and Clif bars. The place filled up completely by showtime.
